Colorado Avalanche History

The Avalanche took a circuitous route to the NHL in that the team started as the Quebec Nordiques in the WHA. This was an upstart league formed to give hockey fans an alternative to its somewhat limited product. This actually spurned a huge expansion by the NHL, one that the WHA ultimately became a part of as the 1970s wound down. The team was competitive during its early years in the league, but a championship was not to be had.

As the Nordiques drifted down in the standings, it would eventually earn the right to some of the top talent in the league with early draft selections. Eric Lindros was one of these top players. However, he had no desire to play for a team with such a horrible record and made no qualms about voicing his displeasure in playing for the Nordiques. Knowing it had no chance of signing him, the Nordiques traded his rights to the Philadelphia Flyers, gaining enough picks and talent to actually allow the Nordiques to become competitive in the league. Unfortunately, for Philadelphia, the team would have been better off merely holding onto one of the players included in the Lindros deal, Peter Forsberg. The future would hold two entirely different levels of success for these two players and their respective teams.

Even with a better team, the Nordiques simply could not put fans in the stands and faced financial difficulty. Ownership finally decided it was time for a change and the franchise was moved to Denver and renamed the Avalanche. The name change, new venue, and fresh talent all paid massive dividends as the Avalanche became a perennial contender and won two Stanley Cups during the 1995-96 and 2000-01 seasons.
