In 1996, Mike Wengren, Dan Donegan, David Draiman, and Steve "Fuzz" Kmak formed Disturbed. Prior to Draiman joining the band, the group was called Brawl and featured vocalist Erich Awalt. When Awalt left the and after a demo tape was recorded, the three remaining members advertised for a singer and found Draiman and the rest was history. Two three-track demo tapes followed, including "Down with the Sickness," "The Game," and "Stupify."

Eventually, the band signed with Giant Records and in 2000 and released The Sickness , its debut album, skyrocketing the group to fame. This album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 and has sold more than four million copies. Believe , the second album, debuted in the number one position on the Billboard 200. In 2003, personality differences led to the firing of bass player Steve Kmak, who was replaced by John Moyer.

The band's third album, Ten Thousand Fists , also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was later certified platinum. It was the first album from the band that included guitar solos. Indestructible , the fourth album, also topped the Billboard 200 upon release and featured multiple tracks that went on to be included in the game Rock Band. The fifth album, Aslyum , continued the Billboard 200 chart-topping streak, with songs featuring the deep, dark cryptic lyrical style that new and die-hard fans love.
