The Lion King History

The Lion King musical is based on the 1994 full length animated feature film produced by Walt Disney Productions. The musical score is due in no small part to the incredible talent of Sir Elton John and Tim Rice. The preview run of the show was done in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in July of 1997 and was an instant success. It was only a few short months later that the show was moved to New York and premiered on Broadway in October of the same year.

While the musical and the film are quite similar in story line, there were a few changes made to make it more endearing to theater goers. One of the main characters, Rafki, was changed to be played by a woman in the musical production due to the need for a female lead to balance the cast. The stage version also added much more music into the production than the film offered. The characters are portrayed by a mix of actors and of puppets. Certain characters, such as Scar and Mufasa, are portrayed by actors in costume with mechanical heads that can be manipulated to create different effects. Timon and Pumbaa are portrayed by actors dressed as life-sized puppets which have controls for the arms, legs and head that must be worked throughout the entire performance. The large costumes took their toll on the actors physically and adjustments were made to make them easier to operate and wear.

It is still going strong at the Minskoff Theater in New York City after over 5,400 performances, which makes it the seventh longest running show in the history of Broadway.
