World Series History
The original championship games were disorganized. The series could last from as few as three to as many as fifteen games before a winner was crowned. Baseball came into its own in 1920. At the end of the 1919 season, the New York Yankees traded Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox. Until 1964, the Yankees were considered one of the premier teams in all of baseball. In the 18 years between 1947 and 1964, the Yankees claimed the World Series championship an impressive 15 times.
Another milestone occurred in 1971 with the first night game of the championship series. This allowed for a larger television audience. Naturally, this increased revenues.
A designated hitter (DH) rule allows teams to substitute a batter in the place of a pitcher with weak-hitting skills. The American League adopted the rule in 1973, but the National League has not adopted it. This, obviously, created a problem during World Series play. From 1973 to 1975, the World Series did not allow designated hitters. Beginning with the 1976 series, designated hitters were allowed in even-numbered years. An agreement was reach in 1986 when Major League Baseball adopted the existing DH rule. That rule provides that designated hitters can play in world Series games played in the American League champion's parks, but may not play when games are held in the National League champion's park. This proves to create a distinct home-field advantage.
There have been many thrilling moments in World Series history. Baseball fans know all about Larsen's perfect game and Reggie Jackson's outstanding performances. Fans still talk about the 1988 game with Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run against Hall of Fame member, Dennis Eckersley. Baseball truly is America's game!
