Chimaira History and Facts

Heavy metal band Chimaira was formed in 1998 by vocalist Mark Hunter and Jason Hager, a rhythm guitarist. Bass player Andrew Ermlick and drummer Jason Genaro completed the initial lineup. Chimaira is regarded as one of the groups that marked the new wave in the American heavy metal movement. The unique name comes from the word Chimera, which is a monstrous creature comprised of several animals, as depicted in Greek mythology. Though the group's main style is groove metal, Chimaira blends in some death metal, industrial metal, and metalcore into its songs.

After adding guitarist Rob Arnold and replacing the drummer with Andols Herrick, their first demo was recorded in January 1999, with live shows and a second demo to follow later in the year. Chimaira signed with Roadrunner Records after performing the song, "Dead Inside" on USA Network television show Farmclub.com and releasing an EP entitled This Present Darkness in 2000. Pass out of Existence was the debut album released by the band in 2001.

Band members have come and gone through the years and the group signed with Ferret Records in 2006 for U.S. distribution, then with E1 Music in January 2011. Chimaira has toured extensively over the years in support of its albums, including a guest appearance on the 2008 Dethklok tour. For over a decade, the band has held an annual Christmas show.
