The Saints were founded in 1966 as the NFL was doing battle against the upstart AFL. The league needed to apply pressure, as what was once considered a nuisance began taking the fan base away from the NFL. Unfortunately, for the Saints, the only major occurrence during the first few decades of existence was Tom Dempsey's 63-yard record field goal.

For years, the Saints were an embarrassment to the city of New Orleans. Year after year, the team posted a losing season and for some reason, despite high draft picks in almost every draft, could not put together a winning team. Draft day fiascos such as the infamous Ricky Williams deal seemed to seal this team's fate year after year.

Finally, Jim Mora would come in to take over the team and for the first time, a winning tradition was born. Mora completely turned the team around and made the playoffs four times from 1987 to 1993. While making the playoffs, the team never made a legitimate run at a championship. The teams losing ways seemed impossible to shake. Sean Payton take over the team in 2005 and it was truly a new beginning.

Payton quickly brought in Drew Brees. The young QB was drafted in the second round by the Chargers, but deemed disposable because of Philip Rivers. Many experts thought this was a huge lack of respect, especially considering the season he had just had for the team. Brees made it his mission to make this team a winner and Payton built a scoring machine around him. All the hard work would pay off in the 2009 season as the Saints would finally get the monkey off its back and beat the Indianapolis Colts to win the Super Bowl.
