The Dave Matthews Band released its first album in 1993 under an independent label and quickly became an immediate hit with the college crowd. On a sad note, this album was dedicated to Dave's sister, Anne, who was the victim of a 1994 murder-suicide.

The New Orleans Habitat Musicians' Village was the recipient of a $1.5 million challenge grant. Just months after the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech, the band performed a free concert for the VT student body and faculty. Later that same week, the band joined with the Allman Brothers Band to raise money for the Piedmont Park Conservancy Association in Atlanta.

In 2008, saxophonist LeRoi Moore was seriously injured in an ATV accident. Although a full recovery was expected, complications took the life of Moore in August. Despite the band's loss, they completed their concert tour which included a Madison Square Garden benefit performance to raise money for lunch cancer research.
