Edmonton Oilers History

Initially starting out in the WHA, the Oilers were formed in 1972 and made an almost immediate impact on the hockey world. The NHL had recently undergone an expansion, and while some of the teams were doing okay, most of them were struggling against the more established teams. The WHA was formed and even though the teams were overall less talented, they were all playing on a level field, so to speak, and many of these games appeared more competitive than the NHL games at the time.

The NHL was becoming more concerned with the WHA and started to make a move to merge the best teams in that league with the existing NHL teams instead of undergoing another expansion. One of the teams absorbed by the NHL was the Edmonton Oilers, led by none other than Wayne Gretzky. Established NHL teams would quickly realize that this was no normal expansion team. In fact, the Oilers would dominate hockey for much of the 1980s, capturing five out of six Stanley Cups from the 1983-84 season on.

As players got older, including Gretzky, the decision was made to trade them off in the hopes of recreating the magic. Instead, the Oilers would fall in the standing and the LA Kings, the recipient of Gretzky, were turned into instant contenders. It would take years before the team would once again climb to prominence and be considered a legitimate threat in the NHL. After the 1990 season, the Oilers would not see the Stanley Cup finals again until 2006, where the team would eventually fall to the Carolina Hurricanes.
