In 1993, Minnesota hockey fans lost their team but it did not take long for another one to surface to fill the gap. In 2000, the National Hockey League went through an expansion and Minnesota was awarded another franchise to the delight of the fans. They again had another local hockey team to rally behind and support on its run to the Stanley cup playoffs.

Expansion teams have a history of struggling for the first few years in trying to find the right players to fill their rosters. The teams record was not stellar, but they began to play together as a more cohesive unit and gathered momentum over the next couple of years. The lock out of 2004 proved to be disastrous for the Wild and other teams in the league. The rule changes that were made before play resumed caused the team's style of play to become more ineffective due the amount of penalties that were now being called. The physical play of the Wild was what they had built the team around and the loss of this advantage caused the team to rethink its strategy. Three years and a few changes later, they would finally retake a slot in the playoffs during the 2007 season.
