New Jersey Devils History

After two NHL expansions, a little known team called the Kansas City Scouts came on the hockey scene in 1974. Their first few years on the ice saw them losing more than winning, putting a strain on both fans and players. The decision came down that a change of scenery might do them some good so the team packed up and relocated to Colorado.

Once in Colorado, the team underwent a change in its name and was dubbed the Colorado Rockies. The relocation did little to improve its hockey playing, however. Denver hockey fans were very disappointed in their new hockey team and let the player know it. Yet again, management stepped in and moved the team one more time. This time the move would take the team across the country and land them in New Jersey in 1982.

Now making their home in Newark, New Jersey, the management felt that the new location was cause for a new name for the team. In keeping with New Jersey as the new home, the team decided to name the team after a South Jersey legend. The Jersey Devil was a creature that roamed the Pine Barrens in New Jersey and cause panic and terror to everyone and everything it met.

Rather than go with an offensively heavy roster, the team's management filled the line up with defensive players and almost immediately, the Devils transformed into a winning hockey team. Its new defensive stance threw the other teams off their game and this strategy led the team to win game after game with only one or two goals. This tact, along with the expert skills of goaltender Martin Brodeur, gave the team the edge it needed to continue winning. Over the next nine seasons, the Devils would bring home the Stanley Cup three times, with the most recent win taking place at the conclusion of the 2002-03 season.
