Boston Bruins History

Only five other teams in the league can make the same claim that Boston can, "we are part of the original six." That phrase may not mean anything in most circles, but in hockey, it is the Holy Grail. When the NHL was formed in 1924, there were only six teams in the league, and Boston was one of them. Right from the very beginning, Boston was a physical team that just pounded its opponents. Eddie Shore, the star of the team, actually ended another player's career when he put him into the boards.

The Bruins would dominate during Shore's tenure, winning multiple championships. However, once he left, things would get a bit difficult for the team. It would take almost two decades before the Bruins would rise to glory, but when they made it back, it was because the team got back to its roots with physical pressure that other teams could not match. The signing of players like Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, and Ken Hodge would complete a team that others feared.

The early 1970s were a great time for Boston as the league became somewhat watered down due to the expansion. Boston's roster of tough guys literally ripped through teams, winning two more championships in the process. It looked as though the Bruins were ready to become a true dynasty, only to have its time cut short by the Philadelphia Flyers, whose makeup somewhat resembled the model of the Bruins.

Over the next few years, the Bruins would again fall from grace and it would take over a decade for the team to become a factor again. Once the 1990s arrived, Boston was back and ready to do damage. For nearly two decades after, Boston was a regular in the playoffs, but could never make a big run. After a successful regular season in 2009-10, Boston was again ready to make a run at the title until the Bruins blew a 3-0 lead against underdog Philadelphia. As sad as that season ending was, the Bruins made up for it in the 2010-11, as the Bruins eliminated Philadelphia, now the favorite. The Bruins beat Vancouver in game 7 for the Stanley Cup.
